Year-Round Safety with Heated Interlock in Georgian Bay
For homeowners in Midland, Penetanguishene, Tiny Township, and Tay Township, winter means months of shovelling, salting, and navigating icy surfaces. Heated interlock installation eliminates these challenges by embedding radiant heating beneath interlocking stone, creating driveways, walkways, and patios that stay clear and safe automatically throughout the winter.
At Forty Five Scapes, we design and install heated interlock systems that are engineered for Simcoe County's extreme winter conditions. Our installations combine expert hardscaping with precision heating infrastructure to deliver a system that performs reliably for decades.
How Heated Interlock Works
Heated interlock systems use one of two technologies to melt snow and ice:
- Hydronic systems -- A glycol solution heated by a boiler circulates through tubing embedded in the base beneath the pavers. Hydronic systems are efficient for large areas like driveways and are often tied into existing home heating infrastructure.
- Electric systems -- Heating cables embedded in the base beneath the pavers provide targeted heat. Electric systems are ideal for smaller areas like walkways, entrance steps, and patio sections where a boiler connection is not practical.
Both systems are controlled by smart sensors that monitor temperature and moisture conditions, activating the heat only when snow or ice is detected. This automated operation ensures surfaces stay clear without manual intervention or wasted energy.
Engineered for Simcoe County Conditions
The success of a heated interlock system depends on the quality of what lies beneath the stone surface. Our installation process includes:
- Excavation to proper depth, accounting for granular base, insulation, heating elements, and paver surface
- Insulation layer beneath the heating elements to direct heat upward toward the surface rather than into the ground
- Proper granular base with compaction to prevent settling and ensure long-term surface stability through freeze-thaw cycles
- Drainage systems to manage meltwater and prevent it from refreezing at surface edges
- Code-compliant electrical or hydronic connections installed by licensed tradespeople
The base preparation is critical in our region. Simcoe County's frost depth of 4 feet means the ground moves significantly through the winter. Our base system is designed to absorb this movement while keeping the heated surface stable and the heating elements protected.
Applications for Heated Interlock
We install heated interlock in a variety of applications across Midland and Penetanguishene properties:
- Driveways -- Full driveway installations with heated interlock for snow-free vehicle access all winter
- Walkways and entrance paths -- Safe, clear footing from the driveway to your front door
- Front steps and stoops -- Combined with heated stone steps for a completely ice-free entrance
- Patios -- Extend the usability of your patio well into the cold season with a heated surface area
Premium Surface Options
Heated interlock uses the same premium interlocking pavers, natural stone, and flagstone options available in any of our hardscaping projects. The heating system is completely invisible beneath the surface, so your driveway or walkway looks identical to a standard interlock installation -- with the added benefit of being perpetually snow-free.
