Every backyard in Midland and Penetanguishene is different—lot size, sun exposure, soil type, and how your family uses the space all shape the design. We start with an on-site assessment and develop a custom plan using our 3D landscape design process so you can see exactly how your new backyard will look before any construction begins. From intimate garden retreats to full outdoor living spaces, we tailor every project to your property.
Simcoe County backyards face extreme temperature swings, heavy frost, and significant snowfall. We select materials and construction methods that perform through it all—natural stone patios that resist cracking, retaining walls with proper drainage and footings, and plant selections rated for Zone 5b. Your Midland backyard will look as good in year five as it does on day one.
We design Midland backyards for enjoyment, not endless weekend maintenance. Native plantings, quality mulch beds, and efficient drainage systems reduce the time you spend working in your yard. Durable hardscape surfaces eliminate muddy patches, and strategic tree placement provides natural shade that reduces the need for structures.
Transform your Midland backyard into a complete outdoor living space. We integrate stone patios, outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, pergolas, and landscape lighting into cohesive designs that extend your home's living area. Georgian Bay evenings are best enjoyed outdoors—we build the spaces that make it happen.

A well-designed backyard does more than look good—it changes how you live. At Forty Five Scapes, we design backyard landscapes for homeowners across Midland, Penetanguishene, Tiny Township, and Tay Township who want outdoor spaces that reflect their lifestyle and take full advantage of our beautiful Georgian Bay setting. Whether you are starting from bare soil on a new build or reimagining an existing backyard, our design-build team handles every detail.
We begin every backyard project by understanding how you and your family use outdoor space. Do you entertain frequently? Need a safe play area for children? Want a private retreat screened from neighbours? Your answers shape the design. We create zones for cooking, dining, lounging, and gardening—connected by stone walkways and framed by lush plantings that provide colour, texture, and privacy throughout the growing season.
The backbone of any great backyard is the hardscape. Our team installs patios, retaining walls, flagstone surfaces, and custom decks that create structure and define outdoor rooms. For sloping Midland lots, retaining walls and terraced levels turn challenging grades into usable, multi-level living spaces. Every hardscape element is installed with proper base preparation and drainage to perform through Ontario's freeze-thaw cycles.
Georgian Bay summers are short, but your outdoor season does not have to be. Custom fireplaces and fire pits let you enjoy cool evenings from spring through fall. Pergolas provide shade during July heat and shelter from light rain. Outdoor kitchens move meal preparation outside, and professional lighting extends usability well past sunset.
We select plants that thrive in Simcoe County’s climate and provide interest across all four seasons. Spring-blooming serviceberry, summer perennial gardens, fall colour from sugar maples and red oaks, and winter structure from white pine and spruce ensure your backyard is never dull. Our planting designs also consider pollinators, wildlife habitat, and long-term growth to create healthy, sustainable gardens.
